Fleece Mittens

These snuggly warm fleece mittens will keep Jack Frost from nibbling on your fingertips. Why not complete the look with our Fringed Fleece Toque and our 5 Minute Fleece Scarf!

MATERIALS

Tissue Paper
0.32m Fleece fabric
0.25m 3/8" (1cm) wide elastic
0.3m Bias tape
Co-ordinating thread

DIRECTIONS

1.)Draw a line on the tracing paper about 38cm long.  Draw a 15cm line at the end of the first line and another 7.5cm up from the same end; lines should be perpendicular to and centered on the first line.  Label the lines A, B, and C as shown.

2.)Place hand on tracing paper, with middle finger on Line A and with wrist centered on Line C.  Fingers should be slightly spread, with thumb extended out to the side, as shown.  Draw around hand, beginning and ending at Line C.

3.)Draw cutting lines 2cm outside hand markings, to allow for ease and seam allowances.  Extend the cutting lines from Line C to Line B, angling the lines so Line B measures 2.5cm wider than Line C, between cutting lines.

4.)Fold fleece right sides together; cut four pieces from fleece, with crosswise direction of fabric across palm.  Make sure to cut 2 with pattern facing up, and cut the other 2 with the pattern facing down.

5.)Mark Line C on the wrong side of two opposite mitten pieces.

6.)For each mitten cut 2 lengths of bias tape equal to Line C.

7.)Pin and stitch the bias tape to the wrong side of each mitten piece, centering the tape along the marked Line C.

8.)For each mitten, cut 2 lengths of elastic, each 2.5cm shorter than Line C. Insert elastic into bias tape casing.  Pin ends to openings.  Stitch in place.

9.)Pin mitten pieces right sides together and stitch a 6mm seam.

10.)Trim seam allowances and clip corner at thumb. Fold down 1.3cm hem and stitch in place.  You may wish to use a zigzag or a decorative stitch.

11.)Turn mitten right side out.
