Estimating Fabric Requirements

For Double Fold Binding (cut on the cross grain)

  1. Width: Add 2 times the width you want the binding to be, plus the width of the seam allowances. Multiply the result by 2 to get the width to cut. (if using a very thick batting add 1/4" to allow for extra fullness.)

    ___________
     Finished Binding Width
    = ______ X 2 =  ___________
    Width to Cut

  1. Length: measure around the outside edge of the quilt and add 12". This allows for mitering corners and overlapping where the binding starts and stops.

    ___________
    Distance Around Quilt
    + 12" =  ___________
    Total Length Needed

  1. Number of Strips: Measure the width of the fabric and subtract the width of the strip being cut to get a maximum width available. This allows for seams. Divide the total length needed by the width available to give the number of strips needed.
