Estimating Fabric Requirements

When estimating the amount of fabric:

do not include the selvages
allow for shrinkage (if fabric will be pre-washed)
cut border strips after the quilt top has been pieced and measured
measure through the middle of the quilt for the most accurate measurement
always cut outer borders from the lengthwise grain- they will be more stable

  1. Decide on a type of border
  2. Measure the quilt's length and width, measuring through the center of the quilt not the edges. If the quilt looks as though it may not be square take two or three measurements and use the average of all the measurements.
  3. Decide on the finished width of the border and add an extra 1/2" to allow for 1/4" seam allowances.
  4. Using the length and width measurements from step 2 and the width of the borders you want (step 3), draw a cutting layout on graph paper. Mark out the useable width of the fabric and then sketch crosswise or lengthwise border strips.
  5. Label the measurements on the paper.
  6. Add lengthwise measurements to estimate fabric requirements.
